Should Hockey Olympians Be Amateurs?

I was listening to a discussion on the radio this morning about whether or not Olympic hockey teams should consist of amateur players. It is my opinion that yes, the team members should be amateurs. That thought was going through my head last night when I was watching Canada play Norway. If we brought in amateurs from the minors, it would give us some insight into the up and coming hockey talent and it would give the amateurs exposure. We wouldn't be watching players who were born in Canada but have moved to the USA because they get paid to play for an American team. We would be watching young Canadians putting their heart and soul into the games for Canada and I think this would contribute to a more exciting hockey game. What are your thoughts?

I don't know. I see your point, but the Olympics are about the best competing against each other. The fact of the matter is that the best hockey players are professional.

Now, if you look at this as the Olympics being a problem for the NHL season ... that's another debate.

@ simats My husband takes the same view as you do. I can see how the Olympics affecting the NHL season could be a separate debate. Good point.
